I’m both a sexuality educator and an adult educator. That is, I teach about sex and I teach classes for adults (both about sex and about other topics). So it seems really funny to me that we use the word “adult” when we mean “sexual.” As in: adult movie, adult store, adult content, adult themes. Most of the time, what we really are referring to is sex: sexual content, sexual themes.

If you’ve ever watched an erotic movie made in the last decade, or looked at porn on the internet, you’ve probably noticed a blurb about the fact that the movie or website contains sexually explicit images and that there are records being kept pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 2257 and C.F.R. 75 ar, along with the address of the custodian of such records. What you may not know is that these record keeping requirements were a result of the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act, which Congress ostensibly passed in order to stop kiddie porn.

By now, I’m sure that most of you have heard the news that J.K. Rowling announced that Dumbledore is gay. And I don’t see any reason to write about that, other than to wonder what he wears under those wizarding robes. Chaps and a chest harness? Silver lame and heels? We may never know.
