It isn’t easy being a sex educator and no one knows that better than sex educators. Researching, writing, talking to people all over the country or the world– it takes its toll and beyond that, it is never something you can finish. We’ll probably never know ALL the answers to the millions upon millions of sex-related questions that exist in the universe. But always there is progress, and lets face it, sex is a subject that will always be relevant and even better, seems to hold a decent amount of entertainment value.

Slate magazine recently posted an article asking some of the top sex educators around what questions they still don’t know the answers to. I think it was a pretty clever idea. You can check out the article here: http://www.slate.com/id/2174411/

It is great seeing what issues and questions weigh heavily on the minds of sex-ed superstars like Dan Savage, Dr. Ruth, or Em and Lo. We usually see sex educators as either the ones who MUST have all the answers, (the GV SESAs know this all too well) or seen as hacks or heretics for pursuing ideas about sex that exist both inside and outside of culture and religion.

There is a tremendous amount of work involved in the field of human sexuality from creating and conducting research studies, to private practices, seminars, workshops and lecture tours, spending weeks in libraries, or huddled over your computer for hours on end trying to make sense of it all. It’s a hard job and a hard field, mostly because sex is something that affects us in some aspect on a daily basis.

Perhaps it is comforting to acknowledge that our favorite sex educators are always still learning and that perhaps it is these burning questions that keep them interested in the field of sexuality– and putting in all that work, so we can reap the benefits.
