How often do local San Francisco Sex Bloggers get invited to appear on mainstream daily talk shows? I have to pause here because if you found this site but you haven’t heard of Violet Blue, stop what you’re doing and check out tinynibbles.com. This blogger is changing the way we talk about sex and helping the mainstream get over the hump that we fortunate few are so lucky.
Getting over that ‘hump’. That gap of knowledge and discourse. It’s not like America doesn’t talk about sex — we’re obsessed with it. However, it seems that we’re just recycling the same stories, and not actually talking about the things that matter.
I personally believe that total accepting of ones own sexuality will change the world. I know, I know, it’s a big leap. But think of it this way: Love yourself, including loving your ‘flaws’ which means in fact that the flaws are are no longer. Which means that others‘ flaws are no longer. And when you can get over little things like size, shape, changes in color and appearance, genitalia differences, then you can find equality of gender and sex and race and age and such as, and… who knows… maybe then the larger systems of classism and racism and all this zenophobia will melt away.
Well, it might not be a 3rd place answer, but at least it keeps me going.
Back to Violet and her Tyra Banks appearance - Isn’t this what often happens with large media? The fear of offending or confusing the audience, a demographic who those ad companies and producers are paying so much money to capture, means that everything from tattoos to unpredictable radical thought is in jeopardy. At the same time, these shows create false hype surrounding ‘taboo’ subjects — some of Tyra’s recent shows have done this, most annoyingly to me, show titles that are extremely derogative to our trans community. Why the ‘morale’ prerogative? That seems so counterproductive.
Which is why the internet can be such a great resource. Cory Silverberg wrote of the struggle against the mainstream ideologies:
“One result of this is that many of the best sex minds get burned so often that eventually they refuse to participate. I hope this won’t happen with Violet Blue. We need more people like her who are willing to fight not only for their right to represent their own unique sexual perspective, but to represent many perspectives at once.”
