Where Should We Put Them?

A few months back my girl boyfriend and I were out with another couple – very cute double date style but more laid back than fancy. Working in the adult industry I tend to be the default go-to when friends have questions about toys, dildos or anything sex related. And since my sig other also works in the industry we are definitely the dynamic duo of sex info and toy savvy. We love our jobs and the industry and sex so it can be really fun - - talking socially about what we do professionally.

As happens, the conversation eventually worked its way around to vibes, dildos, accoutrements, and all other sex-additives. But not how to use them or what’s new or anything like that. Rather their questions were about where they were all supposed to go. “How do you store your toys?”
We were stumped.
Toy ContainerSure. Good Vibrations sells a couple of fantastic toy storage units. They hold a limited amount which works for many people, but when you work in this industry, or have friends who do (as is the case with our friends); you tend to acquire quite a few more items than the usual. Like a lot more. Merry Christmas. Dildo. Happy Birthday. Erotica. Happy Anniversary. Porn. It’s Wednesday. Vibrator. What can I say; sexy stuff makes for a great gift that keeps on giving.
What? It’s true.
So, as the saying goes “variety is the spice of life” and if that’s true I like me some spicy food. I have a lot of sex stuff. Really. A lot. And, as a couple, we have even more. So when the question was posed – it was kind of ridiculous that we didn’t have a good answer. Um, bedside drawer, on the dresser, Tupperware, shoe boxes, wooden trunk, under the bed… those are all fine but not perfect.
We’ve been in the market for a quality bedside table for a long long time and haven’t really found “the one”. We keep our porn on a shelf with all our other DVDs. If you don’t want to see it you shouldn’t be looking. We keep our smut mixed in with all our other books. But all the other… stuff - - we don’t have a system. And a system is important. Nothing kills the mood like trying to get the cat hair off a dildo when you are READY. Or scrambling to find a lube bottle that isn’t empty or a vibe that has new-ish batteries!
So we went away from our double date with this question still looming. The more we thought about it the more we were certain that there had to be something that would work… and work well. We were on a mission: find the perfect toy storage system. Something that allowed easy access, organization and cleanliness. Something that wouldn’t force us to pare down on our assortment and something that would leave room for additions. We don’t want to feel limited. That would be a shame.
A little bit afterwards we were at a local furniture store and found a really cool bed frame that we thought could work. The headboard a rectangle and on each end you could pull out a storage system… it was three shelves that you could store items on and when you didn’t want them to show you could push them back into the headboard… hard to explain but sort of brilliant when you think of it. Problem was – we live in San Francisco and are not minimalists… so there really isn’t a lot of room on either side of our bed. Hmm. We decided to pass since it wouldn’t really work for us. We still think it’s a great storage system though and if somebody has a roomy bedroom it would be ideal. Discreet yet handy. We went to a few different stores searching for bedside tables with lots of drawers and shelves or anything else that would work. But aside from having to buy another complete dresser we weren’t really finding anything.
And then it happened. My brilliant sweetie thought up the perfect item. At first I was skeptical but after thinking about it… it made perfect sense.
An over-the-door shoe organizer! Multiple compartments, easy access, most are see-through so you know what you are getting when you reach in… love it!
So we headed to our local organization store, did a bit of hemming and hawing… and over door shoe organizer… works with sex toys!! Perfect.
After spending an afternoon finding the perfect place to hang it the reward was being able to organize our collection. I chose to do it by category (BDSM on one row, another for dildos, one for vibes and another for “misc”) but there are so many options – color, material, and popularity. And you don’t have to get a clear one – there are canvas units, others that are opaque. There are also a few options that hang from the bar in the closet… really, the possibilities are endless.
It’s exciting to find new, fun, pervy uses for everyday items. Nothing like shopping in the “back to school” section for a sexy toy organizer!

Now that is an awesome idea. My toy collection is not quite up there to where I’m overflowing out of my current box o’ dildos and lubes, but when it is I know what I’ll be getting next. :)

I was looking for a more portable solution, especially because my closet has sliding doors, and did not lend itself well to the shoe organizer. We found this: http://www.stanleytools.com/default.asp?CATEGORY=ZAG+ORGANIZERS&TYPE=PRODUCT&PARTNUMBER=014266R&SDesc=Stanley%26%23174%3B+Tool+Organizer

It’s a Stanley tool box that we bought from Lowes that has a number of compartments of different shapes and sizes, many of which have movable dividers that make the compartments customizable. The outside is opaque, but when it is open, the inside sections have clear lids so you can see what you’re looking for. It’s also hard plastic, so it’s easy to clean if, say, a bottle of lube gets spilled inside.
