R.I.P. Kurt Vonnegut

Yesterday the world lost a great writer, probably my favorite fiction writer of all time, and while on the surface this may seem to have nothing to do with GV, it actually does.

Kurt Vonnegut was always a writer who used his craft to create discussions about what was going wrong with society. Anyone who has read his books, heard his stories, or seen his plays is familiar with his humor and satire and how he used those tools to point out (in an amazingly fresh and clear way) the the absurdities of people attacking each other, how the government was making disastrous decisions, and how we all needed to learn to love each other a little more.

Kurt had this incredible ability to make you laugh while pointing out everything that was wrong around you and though his stories lacked villians they always ended with messages of hope that we as a community of people sharing a city or even a planet had a lot to learn from each other and that we were each special creatures worthy of love. At GV, we are pretty much doing the same thing, except our messages of love and acceptance are filtered through more educationally-based sex information, but I think Kurt would agree with our tactic as much as we appreciate his.

If you have never read anything by Kurt Vonnegut, I would earnestly suggest going out and picking up a copy of "Breakfast Of Champions" or "Cat’s Cradle" or if you prefer short stories to novels, "Welcome to the Monkey House". I guarantee they will make you smile and maybe even open up your heart a little more.
