Vagina Dialogues
By Allison • Apr 6th, 2007 • Category: Blog
So as I was perusing through my usual round of celebrity gossip blogs (we all have our little bad habits and addictions) I noticed a new rumor about yet another celebrity scandal revolving around a sex tape. None of this is surprising and my views on celebrity sex tapes in general will have to wait for another occassion, but what grabbed my attention was this strange quote referring to the young woman featured in the video, which reads: "She’s got overly large girly bits. Everyone knows."
Overly enlarged girly bits? Let us leave aside for the moment that someone used the term "girly bits" to reference the labia and move onto the issue of size. My initial reaction was to send the blogger who posted this quote a copy of FEMALIA just so they could see (and perhaps respond to) this completely unjustified and cruel statement. If the main exposure this person had to viewing vaginas up close was through mainstream porn, I could possibly understand why they would think only tiny, pink, make-up enhanced vaginas were the norm, but if they could even glance lightly through the pages of a book like Femalia they would see that all vaginas are different and beautiful and come in an amazingly large range of sizes, colors, and textures that will naturally differ from person to person and that they are all NORMAL (for lack of a better word).
It is scary and sad that we not only live in a time were young men and women are constantly being intimidated into achieveing unnaturally thin, unhealthy, and unrealistic body types, but now they are going after labia size?! Surgeons need to leave those vaginas alone! There have been growing numbers of women in recent years who have had surgery on their labias to shorten or "pretty them up" to look like the labias of certain female porn stars because they sincerely believed that their "girly bits" were too big or fat or funny shaped or asymmetrical, etc. I only wish I could personally talk to all of these women and tell them their labias are beautiful, and there is no one perfect way they should be forced to look simply because there is no one way/shape/size that every vagina does look. Unfortunately only so many people read our wonderful GV blogs as opposed to those 2 million hits-a-day celebrity gossip sites that should be helping to squash such untrue and harmful illusions, but we have something they don’t….you!
So, please if you have never experienced the thrill of turning the pages of Femalia and bearing witness to all of the intrinsic beauty of vaginas in all their many unique natural forms, stop by a GV store and just take a few minutes. Then spread the word! Labias are great! Labias come in all different sizes and that’s just one of the things that makes them so special! Then, the next time you look at your own vagina (or someone else’s that you love), you’ll have a whole new kind of respect for their incredible, individualistic parts.
Enjoy!
