I’ve always wanted to believe that as I grew more open minded, so did the world around me. Working at a place like GoodVibes sometimes can be very much like living in a sex positive bubble. Closed minded coworkers are the exception rather than the rule here! We all have our own quirks, kinks and lifestyles that make us unique and no matter what that is, most of the people here wouldn’t even consider saying something against it, we live in a sex positive environment God/dess/diety damn it!
The other day, while surfing the web from work for places to promote the GV websites, I suddenly became aware of what’s happening outside of our wondrous little bubble of kinky goodness. I started looking at the websites that come up when I put the words “sex information” into search engines. There are more listings for sex predator databases then there are on positive sexuality! In fact on some days of the week, it seems that those predator lists completely overtake the sex ed pages! One site that I came across was a page entirely dedicated to teaching monogamous couples that the missionary position was the only way to not end up in hell.
Many of us live in a culture that fears sex. Sex is equated with sin & immorality time after time. There are the predators on one end and the puritanical right on the other and somehow all of that wonderful grey area in the middle falls completely out of view for most of mainstream America. Am I the only one who thinks it’s unhealthy to not be able to say the word Penis out loud? It’s a body part!
“Penis!”
“Shhh there are children in the room”
“yeah, and?”
“Penis!”
“::giggle::”
“Penis!”
“yum!”
“That’s a step in the right direction!”
“Penis!”
“Elbow!”
“Yep. You’re definitely one of my friends!”
I’m so annoyed with it all right now that I just went out and bought the domain sexualityinformation.org JUST so that I can fill it with free links to places that say the word penis out loud in a way that embraces its beauty as a part of the body. Vulva, clitoris and anuses are equally welcome. That’s my sex positive activism for today.
Perhaps one of these days I’ll actually sit down and build that site!
