Hey All… I know that I’ve been mostly quiet this month.
I’ve been so busy that there hasn’t been much time for talking about my sex life, or injecting my ideas into yours!

There have been a couple of things flying around the web that are really bugging me and I just have to get it off my chest. I’m sure that some of you have seen the “Lose weight, use less gas” articles all over the place this week. The latest posting on Wired including this article is entitled “Where the blubber meets the road”. To many it may seem like just a silly posting, but the implications of allowing something like this to pass as news are huge.

We live in a society where fat phobia is the last acceptable form of discrimination. There is an underlying assumption that anyone who weighs even slightly more than average is somehow lesser than a svelter individual. This article goes WAY beyond that to actually insinuate that somehow fat people are responsible for high rates of gas consumption. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

First of all, the evidence presented in this survey was not validated scientifically and instead uses estimations which are presented as fact. Second, even with the stretch of calling this “science”, it states that losing 100 lbs saves $40 a year in gas. That’s $0.40 per pound each year. Les be realistic here. Many people wear shoes that weigh more than a pound.

The reality is that if you want to save that $40 a year by losing 100lbs of weight in your car there are many things that could be done realistically. You could buy a lighter car, stop carrying a full size tire in your trunk, clean out your back seat, or even goddess forbid, drive less.

This articles attempt to connect fat to gas consumption is clearly just another form of fat discrimination. These are the messages that the diet industry keeps feeding people to convince them that their bodies are bad.

You may be wondering how this connects to your sex life. Even self assured women like me are affected by articles like this. My first reaction of disgust was followed by self doubt which eventually turned into anger. It’s hard to feel good in ones own body when the media is constantly feeding us messages that even if we’re healthy, eating right and exercising that every extra pound is somehow a blight to society. It’s near impossible to have good sex when society is constantly teaching us to feel ashamed of our bodies. Don’t allow the media to present pseudo-news like this. Complain! Be loud!
