I think what you wrote really sums up the difference between the US and the UK.
In the US, it seems to me that there is a vast, unbreachable divide between the religious right and sex positive people. In the UK, the tiny religious right is considered ridiculous, even by religious believers (who are many fewer in proportion to the population anyway). Masturbation might be seen as not a suitable subject for public discussion but, as you say, even the nuns seemed mildly amused. Most of the press coverage was directed at the fact that the masturbate-a-thon was being televised.
On the other hand, there is no equivalent of you in the UK and I can't imagine that there ever would be!
