Ann, Tom, lesbian video games and Cyndi Lauper
By Judi B. • Sep 15th, 2006 • Category: BlogAnn Richards
I have to admit, I’m not always on the up-and-up when it comes to politics (my head is filled with so much pop culture, the room in the ol’ skull can get kinda cramped), but when the news of former Texas governor Ann Richards’ passing hit the headlines, it sparked my wee brain and some old memories. “Oh, I remember her!” I said when I saw her pictures. I did grow up next door, so to speak, to her….even though most New Mexicans don’t really like to talk about being so close to Texas.
Says Wikipedia: Ann Richards demonstrated interest in social causes such as equality, gay rights and women’s rights….One of her daughters, Cecile Richards, also a liberal activist, became president of Planned Parenthood in 2006.
So, thank you Ann Richards for being such a kick-ass woman. If only every politician thought everyone, regardless of gender or sexual identity, deserved equal rights…wouldn’t it be a beautiful world? Rest in peace.
I hope I don’t get sued for mentioning this…..
What is it about Tom Cruise and those darn porn stars? In this case, it’s a porn producer:
Porn producer Paul Barresi is writing a book, “Pellicano’s Enforcer,” about how he allegedly helped incarcerated former private-eye-to-the-stars Anthony Pellicano protect celebs from negative stories.
And guess who is mentioned in one of the chapters? That’s right…Tom “Top Gun” Cruise. Just can’t shake those rumors, huh Tom?
Speculation says that the chapter will be OWTed (said in Heidi Klum’s accent).
Lesbian video games, what?
*Someone* I live with has been spending a lot of time lately doing research on gender and sexuality terms and resources. Queer librarian studies, anyone? Anyway, she asked me to take a look at the entry for “lesbian” in Wikipedia because she spotted an entry for video games and knew I’d be curious about it.
Sure enough, here is the entry under “lesbian”:
Video games:
SaGa Frontier, a PlayStation title produced by Squaresoft features a lesbian central character named Asellus. A fair deal of the dialogue regarding her lesbianism and female/female relationship was censored out of the game’s English translation, however[3]. An additional character closely tied in with Asellus’s story, a young girl named Gina who tailors her outfits, frequently discusses her deep attraction to Asellus, her exhilaration while being in her presence, and jealousy of other women with whom she is closely associated. Another Playstation title, Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix which is a prequel to Fear Effect, revealed that Hana Tsu Vachel, one of the main characters in both games, developed a sexual relationship with a female character named Rain Qin.
Wow, kinda random, isn’t it? I mean, there’s a lot of information about lesbians that should be recorded, but this is uh, really not that important.
But, this is important!
When I was 15, I saw Cyndi Lauper in concert for the first time and my life was changed forever. For the first time in my life I was surrounded by people that were “different”—and for the first time I knew that being different was okay. Cyndi sang about it, and I listened.
I credit Ms. Lauper with helping me through some difficult times when I was younger (hello True Colors) and for bringing my girlfriend and I together, not once but twice. That’s a long story. But anyway, we’re going to see her in concert tonight, and I’m already freaking out. (breathe! breathe!)
Always an equal rights advocate, Cyndi has been a tireless supporter for the Human Rights Campaign. And, hello! Who brought female masturbation out in the open!
*Crossing fingers* we get to meet her tonight….please send me good vibes!
