So, I’m flipping through the most recent issue of AVN Novelty, which is the toy/accessory publication of Adult Video News, and an ad catches my eye.
The graphics of the ad are really interesting and the retro comic-strip look gives it a friendly look. And then I see what it’s advertising and cringe.
In the ad, the female character thinks the male’s member is too big, but he has a solution…and hands her a “deep throat relief” strip. She takes it, smiles and says, “My throat is very numb” and cut to later when they both are smiling and she says, “I can’t believe I swallowed the whole thing.”
Now, I’m not going to call out the company, or the name of the product, but hello!—numbing cream for sexual purposes is a really bad idea.
When a part of your body has been numbed, it can no longer trigger your brain to tell you that something isn’t right, that your limit has been met, or that something is tearing, being rubbed raw, or stretched too far. Pain is a warning signal, and when you repress it, you’re asking for trouble. The most important part of having sex is feeling good.
When you can’t feel, you can’t feel good.
Good Vibrations will never carry numbing strips. Our Values Statement states: Good Vibrations does not carry products that exploit sexual insecurities or peoples’ desire for a “quick fix” solution to sexual dysfunctions.
Numbing something is attempting to “fix” it…to chemically alter your body to accept something too quickly, or something that may damage it. Slow and steady wins the race…and that’s especially true with sex. Our bodies are highly adaptable, but gradual and slow is the way to go.
And remember, some things seen on TV are not to be attempted at home. And by TV, in this case I mean porn. For instance, porn star Belladonna can deep throat like nobody’s business. And anal sex….well, have you seen her work?
Anyway, the point is….remember to be smart, know your limits and if you don’t feel comfortable doing something…don’t numb it, talk about it.
