My First Blog Entry

Why am I doing this? The web folks keep bugging us to write about our lives here at GV, so maybe I’ll finally take them up on it. Just what is it like working at the nation’s finest purveyor of sex toys & education? And how did I end up here? Good questions.

(Another good one: just what does my mom think about all this? I’ll save that one for a later entry, thanks).

I love my job. When someone at a party asks me what I do, I have to say “I sell dildos.” Yes, I admit it — I love the shock value inherent in that sentence. But seriously, I like to call what we do “bringing joy to the world.” I often extol the virtues of working here to whoever’ll listen to me. The fact that we can (literally) add more happiness to people’s lives is charming to me.

First, there are the products — being in the buying office puts me on very intimate terms with our product selection (no pun intended). But it’s not just our products — it’s our attitude, and our education, and our non-judgment. I have my irons in a lot of fires here at the home office South of Market in San Francisco — so I get to spend time in stores sometimes and help folks get over their nervousness at asking questions. Or I chip in and help answer calls in the Customer Service Center, helping new customers navigate conversations they never imagined having, using vocabulary they didn’t know existed.

But mostly? Mostly, I love the people here. I love coming to work every morning to work with open-minded individuals who see everyone equally, and treat everyone with respect, and do good in the world, and are proud of their work, and have fun. I bet the folks over at the big mainstream toy manufacturers don’t have as much fun as we do, nor are they making folks as happy as we are!

I’ll be chatting on and off about the adventures in the home office, working with our vendors on new products, and going to the occasional trade show (next up: the Adult Novelty Expo in LA next week!)

Joy to the World,
Judah
